Novak Djokovic and Steve Darcis square off in the second round of the 2016 French Open.

Novak Djokovic is coming off a straight sets win over Yen-Hsun Lu that took 24 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 76 percent of his first serve points and 74 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic put his foot on Lu’s neck late in the match, as he lost just two games in the final two sets after a competitive beginning to the match. Djokovic’s ankle looked fine after he dinged it up in the semifinals of the Rome Masters. When healthy and with him getting 70 percent of his first serves in play, Djokovic is the clear cut favorite to win yet another grand slam. The last time Djokovic was eliminated before the third round was in the 2008 Wimbledon.

Steve Darcis is coming off a straight sets win over Marsel Ilhan that took 25 games to decide. In the victory, Darcis won 77 percent of his first serve points and 56 percent of his second serve points. Darcis played a very clean first round match with just 13 unforced errors and was able to win the final set 6-0. Darcis has now won seven of his last nine matches when you include qualifying, and he enters this match as an experienced guy who was once a top-50 player. However, in order to have any shot here, Darcis will have to play as clean of a match as he did in the first round. Darcis has not reached the third round of a grand slam since the 2011 French Open.

These two have played twice in the past, and Djokovic won both meetings in straight sets. The two meetings took place in the 2015 Miami Masters and 2008 Rome Masters. Darcis has managed to win a combined nine games against Djokovic in four sets.

The only real concern with Djokovic entering this tournament was his left ankle that was banged up a bit. He looked fine. That’s bad news for Darcis, who didn’t have much of a chance to win this match anyway.

Look for Djokovic to win yet another match in straight sets.

Novak Djokovic
