Novak Djokovic and Taylor Fritz meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Madrid Open.

Novak Djokovic is coming off the quarterfinals in Monaco, which was a three set loss where he was broken five times and had three double faults. Djokovic has been a bit hit or miss lately where he’s lost three of his last seven matches and has had real issues with his serve. Djokovic isn’t hitting his spots the way we’re used to seeing and has filled crucial games with silly unforced errors. While the rest of the field sees these same chinks in the armor, Djokovic is still a favorite to win this event and you can’t expect these issues to continue for much longer. Djokovic hasn’t lost his opening match of a tournament since Barcelona of last year. Djokovic has won two of his last three matches on clay court.

Taylor Fritz is coming off a straight sets win over Grigor Dimitrov that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Fritz won 74 percent of his first serve points and 54 percent of his second serve points. Fritz won 68 percent of his total service points and converted on two of his four break points. Fritz hit 15 aces and won two impressive close tiebreaks to get one of the better wins of his young career. It was a solid performance serving wise from the young American and one that proves he’s a rising race for USA tennis. Fritz looks to win back-to-back matches on the main tour for the third time since the Australian Open. Fritz has two career wins over top-10 players, one coming this year over John Isner in Auckland. Fritz has won six of his last nine matches on clay court.

These two have played once, which was this year in Monte Carlo, a match Djokovic won in straight sets. The match took 15 games to be decided.

Struggles or not, Djokovic is head and shoulders the more trustworthy player and he just beat Fritz a few weeks ago on clay pretty easily. In fact, Djokovic won each of the last seven games of that match to close it out. Fritz is a name worth watching and should eventually become a player worth taking a shot on in these spots, but his game isn’t there yet.

Djokovic cruises to the next round.
