The Line: -- Over/Under:
Novak Djokovic and Tennys Sandgren meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis Wimbledon.
Novak Djokovic is showing signs of returning to the player he once was, as he made the quarterfinals of the French Open and is fresh off making the final of the Queen's Club Championships. Djokovic went several months where he struggled with injuries, form and was giving opponents confidence when most of the time they lost before they even stepped onto the court. Djokovic still hasn’t won a title in a year, so I’d chill before saying he’s back, but this is easily the best he’s looked in quite some time, and he’s certainly a threat to win the Wimbledon for the second time in his career. Tennis is a much better sport when Djokovic is playing at his highest level. Djokovic has won four of his last five matches on grass court.
Tennys Sandgren heads into this tournament with a losing record, but he showed in the Australian Open just how dangerous he can be. At almost 27 years old, Sandgren has clearly made this yea this coming out party, which includes wins over Dominic Thiem, Stan Wawrinka and Jeremy Chardy. If Sandgren can get off to a quick start and build some confidence, he has a chance to put serious game pressure on his opponent. Sandgren has two career wins over top-10 players, both coming this season. Sandgren hopes to make it out of the first round of a grand slam for the second time in his career. Sandgren has lost three of his last four matches on grass court.
There’s no previous matches between these two players.
Based on how Sandgren looked in Australia, you can’t put anything past him here. The kid is capable of spraying a lot of winners and is usually highly effective with his first serve. Djokovic is playing his best in quite some time, but he still has hiccups here and there and can get sloppy with the unforced errors.
Djokovic wins the match, but I can see Sandgren stealing a set.
