Novak Djokovic and Tomas Berdych play Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open.
Novak Djokovic is coming off a straight sets win over Dominic Thiem that lasted nearly two hours. Djokovic was really tested in his last match and had a lot of unforced errors that we weren’t used to seeing from the top player in the world. Still, Djokovic has won his last eight matches in straight sets and has lost just one singles match since the ATP World Tour Finals. Close scares usually wake Djokovic up and lead to him taking his game to another level in his next match. However, fatigue has to be a factor at this point on short rest, as the Thiem match had to be somewhat draining on his body. Djokovic has reached the semifinals of the Miami Open in four of his five appearances.
Tomas Berdych is coming off a long three set victory over Richard Gasquet. Berdych has now played nine sets in his last two matches, which includes one tiebreak. Berdych has now won 10 of his last 14 matches and would love nothing more than to get over the hump when it comes to the ATP World Tour Masters 1000. Berdych continues to do a solid job with his service game and is always a threat to top competition when he’s hitting his spots and limiting unforced errors. Still, he’ll have to play cleaner tennis than his last two matches if he’s going to pull off the upset. Berdych has made the semifinals of the Miami Open in each of the last two years.
These two have played 24 times, and Djokovic has won 22 of those meetings. The most recent match was in this year’s Doha Open, a match Novak won in two sets. Djokovic has beaten Berdych in nine straight meetings, and his last loss came in the 2013 Rome Masters. Berdych’s other win came in the 2010 Wimbledon.
The history between these two guys indicates Djokovic winning this match. Also, the scare Novak just received now has his attention, which means Berdych can’t be the one to surprise him.
Look for Novak to win in straight sets.
