Pablo Carreno Busta and Franco Skugor meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Winston-Salem Open.
Pablo Carreno Busta is coming off a quarterfinal trip in Cincinnati and has won six of his last nine matches overall. It was one of the more successful tournaments of the year for Carreno Busta, and while he lost his last match, he did manage to win 69 percent of his total service points. Carreno Busta has clearly turned his season around on hard court and is in a wide open draw that should allow him to make a decent run. As long as Carreno Busta is serving well and winning closer to 70 percent of his points, he’s going to give himself a shot to beat anybody in this watered down tournament. Carreno Busta has won four of his last six matches on hard court.
Franco Skugor is coming off a straight sets win over Pierre-Hugues Herbert that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Skugor won 72 percent of his first serve points and 50 percent of his second serve points. Skugor won 61 percent of his total service points and saved two of his three break points. Skugor also gave himself 11 break chances and is going to be fine in this match as well if he continues to be aggressive with his return. The areas of concern for Skugor are the subpar second serves and the double faults. Skugor has a chance to win two matches in a single tournament for the first time since Italy in challenger play. Skugor has won five of his last seven matches on hard court.
These two have played once, which was in the 2017 Davis Cup, a match won in five sets.
Carreno Busta has to view this event as a chance to win the title, as he’s playing solid tennis at the moment and is one of the better players in the draw. Skugor hasn’t shown recently he can win back-to-back matches in a ATP event, and he’s now going up against a borderline top-10 player.
Carreno Busta should win this in straight sets.
