Pablo Carreno Busta and John Millman meet Friday in the semifinals of the 2016 Winston-Salem Open on ESPN2.
Pablo Carreno Busta is coming off a straight sets win over Andrey Kuznetsov that took 19 games to decide. Carreno has yet to drop a set this tournament and just beat a top-50 opponent rather easily. This has been a clear breakout season for the 25-year-old Carreno, and he’s building a ton of confidence heading into the upcoming US Open. As long as Carreno continues to serve well, he should be in good shape this match. Carreno has won five of his last seven semifinal appearances and hopes to make his third final appearance this season. Carreno has won six of his last eight matches on hard court.
John Millman is coming off a straight sets win over Richard Gasquet that took 21 games to decide. Millman is coming off the easiest performance of the tournament yet and it happened to be against a player ranked 15th in the world. Millman is on quite a run right now with four victories this tournament and anything after his recent success has to be considered a bonus given the way his career has gone thus far. Millman should be able to play this match pressure free and look to hit winners whenever possible. Millman hopes to make the first career ATP final appearance of his career. Millman has won seven of his last eight matches on hard court.
These two have met once, which was in this year's Miami Masters, a match Millman won in straight sets. The match took 17 games to decide.
Millman is coming off probably the biggest victory of his career and now has to play a red hot Carreno, who has already made two finals this season. I’m not sure Millman has enough in the tank to win another big match against the more polished Carreno.
I’ll take Carreno in a tight one.
