Pablo Carreno Busta and Marin Cilic meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Rome Masters.

Pablo Carreno Busta is coming off a three sets win over Aljaz Bedene that took 31 games to decide. In the victory, Carreno Busta won 69 percent of his first serve points and 41 percent of his second serve points. Carreno Busta wasn’t at his best with his second serve, but he did manage to win 47 percent of his return points and produced seven breaks. Carreno Busta has managed to win three straight tough three set matches, but he must improve those second serve percentages if he has a chance of making an even deeper tournament run. Carreno Busta has won his last four quarterfinal appearances. Carreno Busta hopes to make the semifinal of a Masters 1000 for the third time in his career. Carreno Busta has won five of his last seven matches on clay court.

Marin Cilic is coming off a straight sets win over Benoit Paire that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Cilic won 77 percent of his first serve points and 64 percent of his second serve points. Cilic managed to win 72 percent of his total service points and was broken just once in his victory. Cilic has had some issues on clay this season, but he’s coming off one of his more complete matches and can use this as a building block as he chases an even deeper tournament run. Cilic has not made a semifinal appearance since the Australian Open. Cilic has won five of his last seven quarterfinal appearances. Cilic hopes to make the semifinals in a Masters 1000 for the fourth time in his career. Cilic has won five of his last eight matches on clay court.

These two have played twice and Cilic has won both meetings. The most recent match was in the 2018 Australian Open, a match Cilic won in four long sets. Cilic is 5-1 against Carreno Busta in terms of sets.

Carreno Busta doesn’t make many deep runs in big tournaments and won’t have much of a chance here if he continues to struggle with his second serve. Cilic hasn’t been the most consistent version of himself recently, but he has the game to wear down Carreno Busta and eventually force him to cave. Carreno Busta just isn’t good enough to beat top tier players on the big stage.

Give me Cilic to make the semifinals.
