Pablo Cuevas and Federico Delbonis meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Swedish Open.
Pablo Cuevas is coming off a second round exit in Wimbledon, but he now returns to clay where he’s played his best tennis this season and recently won a challenger title in France. In his last match, Cuevas had issues with his second serve and produced 43 unforced errors, something he’ll obviously need to fix if he’s going to make a run in this event. The good news is Cuevas has been much more comfortable on clay and it’s where he’s been able to pile up a great deal of victories this year. Cuevas has lost his opening match on the main tour three times since Miami. Cuevas has won six of his last eight matches on clay court.
Federico Delbonis is coming off a three sets win over Bernabe Zapata Miralles that took 29 games to decide. In the victory, Delbonis won 63 percent of his first serve points and 53 percent of his second serve points. Delbonis won 60 percent of his total service points and converted on six of his 15 break points. Delbonis got 63 percent of his first serves in play and saved four of his seven break points. Delbonis has now won six straight matches when you include his challenger title in Perugia, and he’s also won five of his last eight matches that have gone the distance. Delbonis hopes to win back-to-back matches on the main tour for the first time since Geneva. Delbonis has won seven of his last eight matches on clay court.
These two have played four times and Cuevas has won three of those meetings, including the most recent match in 2016 Rio De Janeiro. Three of the four matches were decided in straight sets and every match has taken place on clay.
Delbonis has been on a tear this clay season, but he’s running into a player who has dominated him over the years and all four of those matches were on clay. Cuevas is simply the better player overall and has had far more success this season against better competition.
Cuevas should win this match in straight sets like he has in the past.
