Patricia Maria Tig and Laura Siegemund meet in the semifinals of the 2019 tennis Bucharest Open.

Patricia Maria Tig is coming off a three sets win over Kristyna Pliskova that took 27 games to decide. In the victory, Maria Tig won 70 percent of her first serve points and 47 percent of her second serve points. Maria Tig won 62 percent of her total service points and converted on three of her five break points. Maria Tig got 67 percent of her first serves in play and saved eight of her 10 break points. Maria Tig has saved 10 of her 14 break points this tournament and has won three straight matches on the main tour for the first time since Seoul of 2016. This is easily the best Maria Tig has looked in quite some time. Maria Tig hopes to make her second career final appearance and first since the 2015 Baku Cup. Maria Tig has won six of her last eight matches on clay court.

Laura Siegemund is coming off a straight sets win over Irina Begu that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Siegemund won 70 percent of her first serve points and 56 percent of her second serve points. Siegemund won 66 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her nine break points. Siegemund got 73 percent of her first serves in play and won 11 of the last 13 gams to close out the match. Siegemund has won 10 of her last 15 sets overall and has won three straight matches on the main tour for the first time since 2017 Stuttgart. Siegemund hopes to make her fourth career final appearance and the first since the 2017 Stuttgart Open. Siegemund has won five of her last six matches on clay court.

These two have played twice and Siegemund won both matches in three sets, including the most recent meeting in the 2016 US Open.

Maria Tig has beaten some quality competition to get to this point and has the home crowd behind her, which always helps. However, Siegemund is the better player overall and has a more reliable serve. Maria Tig does play her best tennis on clay and being at home has its advantages, but Siegemund is the safe pick at this stage of the tournament. It’s just easier to just the more experienced German.

Pick:
Laura Siegemund
