Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Pedro Sousa and Radu Albot meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis Swedish Open.

Pedro Sousa has spent all his time in challenger play since trying to quality for the French Open, and he hasn’t had a ton of success, as he’s lost six of his last eight matches. Sousa is coming off a second round loss in Germany and simply hasn’t been able to get his serve in consistent form, as he’s facing way too many break points and not able to put his opponent away. The obvious concern with Sousa at this point is if he can’t beat players ranked way outside the top-100 in a smaller event, you’d expect the struggles to continue in a main ATP tour tournament that is actually pretty solid when it comes to household names. At this point, any success the 30-year-old Sousa can find to build on the rest of the season would be considered a worthwhile showing. Sousa has split his last six matches on clay court.

Radu Albot made it to the third round of the Wimbledon before getting bounced in straight sets by John Isner. Albot played a lot of tennis to get to that point, but he’ll take it considering it was just the second third round appearance of a grand slam in his career. In his two Wimbledon victories, Albot combined for 112 winners, so he clearly is in great form when it comes to his shotmaking ability and knows he can dictate the points. After some decent success on the big stage, it’s going to be interesting to see if the 28-year-old Albot can build on that, or if he’s still a bit tired, as it’s not easy to jump back into another tournament after just playing 13 sets in three matches. Albot has lost three of his last five matches on clay court.

These two have played twice, with both matches coming in challenger play. Albot won the 2016 Poznan Challenger and Sousa won the 2011 Trani Challenger. This will be the third straight match between these players on clay court.

We have a player in Sousa who is struggling in challenger against subpar players, while Albot just made the third round of the Wimbledon and has been a shotmaking machine as of late. This should be a rather routine match for Albot, as long as he’s motivated to build on his recent performances.

Sousa simply isn’t playing well enough to trust in any main tour event.

Pick:
Radu Albot
