Petra Kvitova and Anett Kontaveit meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis French Open.

Petra Kvitova is coming off a straight sets win over Lara Arruabarrena that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Kvitova won 74 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Kvitova was sharp with her serve, but it was the fact she won 57 percent of her return points and broke five times that was most impressive. Kvitova continues to play in great form and has found her rhythm on clay court, as this is by far the best she has looked since returning from her incident. Kvitova hasn’t had much recent grand slam success, but she’s looking like a legit threat in this years French Open. Kvitova hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the third time since 2016. Kvitova has won 13 straight matches on clay court.

Anett Kontaveit is coming off a straight sets win over Alexandra Dulgheru that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Kontaveit won 60 percent of her first serve points and 56 percent of her second serve points. Kontaveit won her match by hitting 31 winners and breaking her opponent five times. Kontaveit can still be a little more consistent with her serve and lower her unforced error numbers, but she’s returning at a high level and has been hitting the ball with confidence. With less unforced errors, Kontaveit is a threat to have one of her better grand slam runs of her career 22 years old. Kontaveit has a chance to reach the fourth round of a grand slam for the third time in her career. Kontaveit has won eight of her last 10 matches on clay court.

These two have played twice and Kvitova has won both meetings. The most recent match was in this years Madrid Masters, a match she won in three sets. Both meetings between these two went the distance.

These two have been in two battles when they’ve played in the past, and there’s no reason to expect anything different. However, experience matters in these big matches and it’s why Kvitova has grinder out both wins previously. Also, Kvitova is arguably the hottest player on the women’s side with 13 straight wins on clay. Hard to bet against her right now.

Kvitova reaches the fourth round.
