Petra Kvitova and Ashleigh Barty meet in the quarterfinals of the 2019 tennis Australian Open.

Petra Kvitova is coming off a straight sets win over Amanda Anisimova that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Kvitova won 83 percent of her first serve points and 60 percent of her second serve points. Kvitova won 80 percent of her total service points and didn’t face a single break point in her one hour victory. Kvitova has won all eight sets this tournament and has been broken just once in her last three matches. With wins in 18 of her last 19 sets overall, Kvitova is as hot as she’s been in years and a legit threat to make a push for her third career grand slam title. Kvitova has a chance to make her sixth career grand slam semifinal and second at the Australian Open. Kvitova is 5-5 in career grand slam quarterfinal matches. Kvitova has won 10 of her last 11 matches on hard court.

Ashleigh Barty is coming off a three sets win over Maria Sharapova that took 27 games to decide. In the victory, Barty won 68 percent of her first serve points and 60 percent of her second serve points. Barty won 65 percent of her total service points and produced four breaks on 10 break points. It wasn’t the prettiest performance from Barty and her chances looked slim after dropping the first set, but she got help from the home crowd and stormed back the biggest win of her young career. However, Barty has a combined 65 unforced errors in her last two matches, something she must clean up. Barty has a chance to make her first career grand slam semifinal. Barty hasn’t won five matches in a single tournament since winning the Nottingham Open back in June. Barty has won eight of her last nine matches on hard court.

These two have played three times and Kvitova has won all three matches. The most recent match was last week in Sydney, a match that ended in a three set tiebreak. The other matches were a three setter in Birmingham in 2017 and a straight sets win in the 2012 French Open.

These are two players we’ve backed heavy the last couple of weeks, as they entered this tournament on fire. I also suggested a while back Barty being a future bet with how well she’s playing. These matches have been tight in the past and Barty had her chances to win last week. With that said, I can’t bet against Kvitova in this match. Kvitova has the power to hit through Barty and keep the Australian on her toes. Barty is growing up before our eyes and showed a lot of mental toughness by coming through in her last match. It also helps to have the crowd on your side. However, if we’re being honest, Sharapova didn’t help herself with a million unforced errors. She made a lot of mistakes Kvitova won't make.

I give Kvitova the edge in this match.
