Petra Kvitova and Donna Vekic meet in the third round of the 2019 tennis Miami Open.

Petra Kvitova is coming off a straight sets win over Maria Sakkari that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Kvitova won 71 percent of her first serve points and 65 percent of her second serve points. Kvitova won 69 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her five break points. Kvitova was sharp in her victory given that she entered this tournament losing her last two matches, and she finished the win by winning six of the final eight games. As long as Kvitova is serving well and is the player she was before these recent hiccups, she’s capable of making another deep tournament run. Kvitova has won seven of her last 10 matches on outdoor hard court.

Donna Vekic is coming off a straight sets win over Sara Sorribes Tormo that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Vekic won 57 percent of her first serve points and 65 percent of her second serve points. Vekic won 61 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her eight break points. Vekic was sharp with her return and was in complete control of her win, but she has to be more effective with her first serve if she has a shot at advancing. Vekic has a shot at winning at least two matches in five of her last eight tournaments. Vekic has seven career wins over top-10 players, two coming this year. Vekic has won four of her last six matches on outdoor hard court.

These two have split the previous two matches. Vekic won the match this year in St. Petersburg and Kvitova won in the 2014 Miami Open. Both matches were decided in straight sets.

Vekic is worth a look here considering she beat Kvitova last month and did so by winning each of the last six games. With that said, you can probably chalk that performance up to fatigue considering Kvitova was fresh off final appearances in Sydney and the Australian Open, so she had a ton of matches under her belt and was probably feeling the effects of so much tennis in such a short span.

A fresh and probably motivated Kvitova should cruise in this match.

Petra Kvitova
