Petra Kvitova and Elina Svitolina meet in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.

Petra Kvitova is coming off a three set victory over Ekaterina Makarova that took 30 games to decide. Kvitova has lost just one set to get to this point and should be very confident considering she beat Caroline Wozniacki and Makarova in back-to-back matches. Kvitova is at her best when finishing her points quickly and pressuring her opponent with aggressiveness. She’ll have to do that here to have a shot. Kvitova has six wins over top-10 players since 2015 and has never made the semifinals of the olympics. Kvitova has won 10 of her last 14 matches on hard court.

Elina Svitolina is coming off a shocking straight sets win over Serena Williams that took 19 games to decide. Svitolina was able to take advantage of a ton of unforced errors from Serena, but in the end, she made the shots when needed most and was able to control her nerves for once. It will certainly be interesting to see how Svitolina is able to respond after the biggest victory of her career. Svitolina does have four titles under her belt and now six career victories over top-10 players, but this is easily the biggest stage of her young career at 21 years old. Svitolina has to win the mental games at this point and can’t allow nerves to takeover. Svitolina has won 13 of her last 16 matches on hard court.

These two have played three times in the past and Kvitova has won two of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2015 Dubai Open. Svitolina’s only win over Kvitova came in the 2014 Cincinnati Masters.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Svitolina comes out after the biggest win of her career. It’s also tough to imagine her beating the top player in the world and a top-15 player in Kvitova in back-to-back weeks. Kvitova is playing well lately and has the experience in these type of matches.

I’ll take Kvitova to win this match.

Pick:
Petra Kvitova
