Petra Kvitova and Elina Svitolina meet in the third round of the 2016 US Open.
Petra Kvitova is coming off a straight sets win over Cagla Buyukakcay that took 22 games to decide. Kvitova has looked sharp early on, especially with her service game, and she’s now won 10 of her last 12 sets played. Kvitova usually starts to trip up in grand slams around this point, but she’s in great form since winning an olympic medal and slowly creeping back towards a top-10 ranking. Maybe this year is different for the Czech. Kvitova hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time since last years US Open. Kvitova has won 10 of her last 12 matches on hard court.
Elina Svitolina is coming off a three set win over Lauren Davis that took 26 games to decide. Svitolina was able to win another tight three set match and managed to silence the American crowd who was rooting for Davis to prevail. Svitolina has been in pretty good form as of late, which includes two victories this season over top-10 players, and she now has a chance to make the fourth round of the US Open for the first time in her career. In fact, Svitolina hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for just the third time in her career. Svitolina has won six of her last seven matches on hard court.
These two have played four times in the past and Kvitova has won three of those matches. The most recent match was in this year's olympics, a match Kvitova won in 14 games. Svitolina’s only win over Kvitova came in the 2014 Cincinnati Masters.
Kvitova has beaten Svitolina in three straight matches and just waxed her in the olympics a few weeks ago. Hard not to side with Czech in this match given the history.
Kvitova advances to the fourth round.
