Petra Kvitova and Elise Mertens meet in the quarterfinals of the tennis Cincinnati Open.

Petra Kvitova is coming off a straight sets win over Kristina Mladenovic that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Kvitova won 63 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Kvitova won 53 percent of her total service points and produced six breaks on 18 break points. Kvitova could still improve her second serve to help take her game to the next level, but her return has been on point this tournament and she seems to be most comfortable on hard court where she can control the pace. Kvitova has a chance to make the semifinal of a WTA Premier 5 Tournament for the third time since 2016 and her second career semifinal in the Cincinnati Open. Kvitova has won three of her last four matches on hard court.

Elise Mertens is coming off a straight sets win over Sloane Stephens that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Mertens won 65 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Mertens won 47 percent of her total service points and produced five breaks on eight break points. Mertens is probably coming of the most impressive victory of the tournament, beating a top-10 player rather easily on her home soil, a place Stephens has been a machine at recently. Mertens now has three career wins over top-10 players and has now won 12 of her last 17 sets played. Mertens is quietly proving to doubters that her breakout year has been no fluke. Mertens has won six of her last seven matches on hard court.

There’s no previous matches between these two players.

Mertens has shown she’s no pushover and is capable of winning any match you put in front of her. The issue is Mertens struggles with her second serve and the fact Kvitova does a wonderful job of returning and controlling the pace on fast surfaces. This is a match Kvitova should be able to control from start to finish, and she has the experience edge if the match gets tight.

I trust Kvitova more in this match.
