The Line: -- Over/Under:
Petra Kvitova and Flavia Pennetta meet in the quarterfinals of the 2015 US Open.
Petra Kvitova is coming off a straight sets win over Johanna Konta and has played eight sets this tournament. Kvitova is winning at least 79 percent of her first serve points and 32 percent of her second serve points. Kvitova has combined for 17 aces, 77 winners and 67 unforced errors. Kvitova is simply killing her first serve and has yet to really be tested due to overwhelming her opponent. Kvitova has also had 22 or less unforced errors in three of her four matches, making it tough for her to even come close to losing a set thus far. This is Kvitova’s third grand slam quarterfinal appearance since 2013. Kvitova has not made the semifinal of a grand slam since the 2012 French Open.
Flavia Pennetta is coming off a straight sets win over Samantha Stosur and has played 10 sets overall. Pennetta is winning at least 66 percent of her first serve points and 33 percent of her second serve points. Pennetta has combined for 15 aces, 62 winners and 56 unforced errors in her last three matches. Pennetta has had no more than 23 unforced errors in all of her matches and is simply making her opponent make all of the mistakes. The concern with Pennetta for this match is the fact she’s getting no more than 59 percent of her first serves in play. Still, Pennetta is a fiery competitor who can hang with just about anyone when on. This will be Pennetta’s fourth grand slam quarterfinal appearance since 2013. Pennetta’s only grand slam semifinal appearance came in the 2013 US Open.
These two have played six times and the series is split at three games. The most recent match was in the 2012 Olympics, a match Kvitova won in straight sets. Kvitova has won the last three matches over Pennetta. This will be the fourth time these two meet on hard court.
Pennetta should never be counted out against anybody with her competitiveness and ability to make shots. But Kvitova is simply playing at another level right now and is far more consistent with her service game.
Kvitova advances to the semifinals.
