The Line: -- Over/Under:
Petra Kvitova and Kiki Bertens meet in the semifinals of the 2019 tennis Stuttgart.
Petra Kvitova is coming off a three sets win over Anastasija Sevastova that took 25 games to decide. In the victory, Kvitova won 75 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Kvitova won 68 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her four break points. Kvitova dominated the match after dropping the first set and got 71 percent of her first serves in play, which has been key to her success these past several months. Kvitova has a chance to win at least three matches for the fifth time in her last seven tournaments. Kvitova hopes to make her fourth final appearance of the year and the 36th final appearance of her career. Kvitova has won 15 of her last 16 matches on clay court.
Kiki Bertens is coming off a straight sets win over Angelique Kerber that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Bertens won 78 percent of her first serve points and 68 percent of her second serve points. Bertens won 75 percent of her total service points and converted on two of her four break points. Bertens has won six of her seven sets this tournament and is coming off a match in which she didn’t face a single break point. Bertens now has two wins over top-10 players this year and 14 overall dating back to last year. Bertens hopes to make her second final appearance of the year and the 11th final appearance of her career. Bertens has won four of her last five matches on clay court.
The two have split the previous four matches, with Bertens winning the last two meetings, including the most recent in Cincinnati last year. Kvitova won the only match on clay in Madrid last year. Two of the four matches between Bertens and Kvitova went the distance.
Bertens has her serve working for her and has had the recent edge over Kvitova. The problem is Kvitova has been one of the more consistent players on the women’s side this year and she’s dominated on clay court dating back to last year. You can also argue that Kvitova has been playing her best tennis of her career. It’s just hard to bet against Kvitova when she’s piled up the wins the way she has this year.
I’ll give the edge to Kvitova to make another final trip.
