The Line: -- Over/Under:
German tennis superstar, Angelique Kerber has made it into the second round of the 2019 WTA Madrid Masters in Spain. At this stage of the tournament, Angelique Kerber will be playing against Petra Martic from Croatia.
Angelique Kerber looked very impressive in the opening round as she won her match in straight sets. During the win, Kerber impressed with her returning as she won 61% of her receiving points. Angelique Kerber broke her opponent’s serve on 6 occasions while winning 67% of her service games. It has been a solid start to the clay court season for Kerber as she made the semifinals of the Monterey Open and the quarterfinals of the Stuttgart Open prior to arriving at Madrid. Kerber is an extremely skilled defensive player and the conditions at Madrid are suited for her style of tennis. That being said, Kerber has a modest record at the Madrid Master as she has only won 57% of her matches at this event. Kerber looked good in the opening round and she will be determined to improve her record in Madrid.
On the other side of the coin, Petra Martic also won her previous match in straight sets. It was a significant win for Martic as she eliminated the local hero, Garbine Muguruza. It was a good effort by Martic as she broke Muguruza’s serve on 3 occasions while winning 83% of her service games. This will be a tougher match for Petra Martic as she is playing against the number 4 seed.
Petra Martic and Angelique Kerber have played each other 3 times in the past. Martic has won on 2 occasions while Kerber has won once. The most recent match between these two players was in 2012 where Angelique Kerber won in straight sets. Martic’s wins over Kerber were in 2009 and 2008.
As far as this match is concerned, I am going to pick Angelique Kerber to win this match. Kerber is the number 4 seed and a very strong clay court player. Kerber looked dominant in the opening round and the German has an athletic ability that will make it tough for Martic to compete. With that in mind, I see Angelique Kerber making it into the third round of the tournament.
