The Line: -- Over/Under:
Marketa Vondrousova and Petra Martic meet in the final of the 2019 tennis Istanbul Cup.
Marketa Vondrousova is coming off a straight sets win over Barbora Strycova that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Vondrousova won 63 percent of her first serve points and 53 percent of her second serve points. Vondrousova won 60 percent of her total service points and converted on six of her 11 break points. Vondrousova has won each of her last eight sets and has produced a combined 19 breaks in her last three matches. Vondrousova could bump up her serving percentage to make things a little easier, but there’s no doubt she’s comfortable on this service and quite confident with wins in 18 of her last 21 matches overall. Vondrousova looks to win her second career singles title and first since the 2017 Ladies Open Biel Bienne. Vondrousova is 1-1 in previous final appearances and this is her first title trip on clay. Vondrousova has won eight of her last 10 matches on clay court.
Petra Martic is coming off a straight sets win over Margarita Gasparyan that took seven games to decide. In the victory, Martic won 65 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Martic won 60 percent of her total service points and converted on three of her 10 break points. Martic was in complete control of her match that took less than an hour due to the retirement of Gasparyan eight minutes into the second set. It was a much needed quick effort for Martic, who played three straight three set matches to just reach the semifinals. Martic looks to win her first career singles title after dropping her previous two final appearances in the 2012 Malaysian Open and 2018 Bucharest Open. Martic has won eight of her last nine matches on clay court.
These two have played three times and Martic has won every match in straight sets, including the most recent meeting in this years Australian Open. This will be the first meeting on clay.
Vondrousova has been a machine this week and has yet to even drop a set, but her serve has been questionable at best and it’s only a matter of time before that catches up to her. Martic has crushed in the previous three meetings against Vondrousova and has to be quite motivated with this being her first real chance to win a singles title.
I’m leaning toward Martic based on the history.
