Philipp Kohlschreiber and Juan Martin Del Potro meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 Indian Wells Masters.
Philipp Kohlschreiber is coming off a straight sets win over Pierre-Hugues Herbert that took 23 games to decide. In the victory, Kohlschreiber won 74 percent of his first serve points and 57 percent of his second serve points. Kohlschreiber has won his last six sets and is coming off a performance in which he got 79 percent of his first serves in play. Kohlschreiber came into this tournament in shaky form, but he’s serving at a really high level and will have a chance to go even deeper if those percentages continue. Unfortunately for Kohlschreiber, he hasn’t made a semifinal appearance on outdoor hard court since the 2014 Vienna Open. Kohlschreiber has won four of his last five quarterfinal matches overall. Kohlschreiber has won five of his last seven matches on hard court.
Juan Martin Del Potro is coming off a three sets win over Leonardo Mayer that took 31 games to decide. In the victory, Del Potro won 77 percent of his first serve points and 55 percent of his second serve points. Del Potro had to dig deep to win his fourth round match, as he bounced back after dropping the first set and won a second set tiebreak. Del Potro has been returning well this tournament and did just enough against Mayer and that powerful serve. After winning a match that Del Potro could have easily dropped, he has to be entering the quarterfinals with a great deal of confidence. Fresh off winning the Mexican Open, Del Potro is in great form at the moment. Del Potro has won six of his last seven quarterfinal matches. Del Potro has won eight straight matches on hard court.
These two have played eight times and Del Potro has won six of those meetings. The most recent match was in Stuttgart in 2016, a match Kohlschreiber won in straight sets. Kohlschreiber has won the last two meetings against Del Potro. However, Del Potro is 5-1 against Kohlschreiber in his career on hard court.
Del Potro has owned Kohlschreiber on hard court, and that’s not surprising considering he’s not a hard court player. Again, Kohlschreiber hasn’t made a semifinal appearance on outdoor hard court in over four years. Del Potro will use his shotmaking ability to his advantage and get the job done in likely straight sets.
Del Potro rolls to the semifinals.
