Qiang Wang and Elina Svitolina meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Hong Kong Open.
Qiang Wang is coming off a straight sets win over Christina McHale that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Wang won 61 percent of her first serve points and 47 percent of her second serve points. Wang won 58 percent of her total service points and produced six breaks on nine break points. Wang has won all four sets this tournament and has produced 11 breaks on 15 break points. Wang could improve her service percentage, but she’s playing well overall and now has a chance to win at least three matches for the fifth straight tournament. With the crowd behind her and her feisty return ability, Wang has to like her chances to keep her hot stretch alive. Wang has won five of her last six matches on hard court.
Elina Svitolina is coming off a straight sets win over Nao Hibino that took 32 games to decide. In the victory, Svitolina won 71 percent of her first serve points and 63 percent of her second serve points. Svitolina won 68 percent of her total service points and produced five breaks on 11 break points. Svitolina has yet to drop a set this tournament and has produced a combined 10 breaks in her first two matches. Svitolina entered this tournament on a three-match losing streak, so seeing her turn things around and play overall clean tennis has to be good for her confidence. Svitolina has a chance to win three matches in a single tournament for the third time in her last nine tries. Svitolina has split her last six matches on hard court.
These two have played three times and Svitolina has won all three matches. The most recent meeting was in this years US Open, a match Svitolina won in 20 games. The other two matches, 2018 in Dubai and 2017 in the Indian Wells Masters, needed three sets to be decided.
Wang may be a live underdog given her recent success on hard court and the fact she has a serious crowd advantage. The problem is Svitolina is head and shoulders the better player and usually dominates lesser opponents. Other than having the crowd on her side, it’s hard to make a case for Wang in this match.
Svitolina reaches the semifinals in straight sets.
