Australian tennis superstar, Alex de Minaur has made it into the third round of the 2019 ATP Australian Open. Alex de Minaur will now face the second-best player in the world, Rafael Nadal from Spain.
Alex de Minaur had a tough second round match as he had to fight for 5 set to defeat Henri Laaksonen. Alex de Minaur started the match well by winning the opening 2 sets but fell away in the 3rd and 4th sets to allow his opponent back into the match. Alex de Minaur should great composure during the final set as he returned well to win the set 6-3. Alex de Minaur has been in exceptional form leading up to this event as he won the ATP Sydney International last week. The confidence from the win at Sydney seems evident at this event as Alex de Minaur is playing with great composure. This is set to be the biggest challenge of the tournament for Alex de Minaur as he is playing an exceptional player in Nadal.
Looking at Nadal, the world number 2 has been dominant as he has beaten both his opponents in straight sets. In his previous match, Rafael Nadal beat Matthew Ebden in straight sets. It was a confident performance as Nadal won 5 break points while winning all of his own service games. Rafael Nadal has had success at Melbourne Park in the past as he won the Australian Open in 2009. With such a strong record at this venue and exceptional form leading up to this match, Rafael Nadal will be very hard to stop.
Rafael Nadal and Alex de Minaur have never played against each other in the past.
All in all, I see Rafael Nadal winning this match. While Alex de Minaur has been very impressive, I don’t think he has the ability to beat Nadal. Rafael Nadal is one of the top players in the world and he looks in very good form. With that in mind, I see Nadal winning this match and making the fourth round of the tournament.
