Rafael Nadal and Andreas Seppi meet in the second round of the 2016 US Open.

Rafael Nadal is coming off a straight sets win over Denis Istomin that took 25 games to decide. Nadal needed a quick match to not only save energy but to gain some confidence after a quick exit in Cincinnati and a disappointing finish in the olympics. Nadal has had issues all year with injuries and inconsistent play but when he’s finishing his points with attitude and has that usual swagger, he’s a dangerous player in any tournament. It’s one match at a time for Nadal right now. Nadal has been bounced before the third round of a grand slam twice since 2014. Nadal has won six of his last nine matches on hard court.

Andreas Seppi is coming off a four set win over Stephane Robert that took 36 games to decide. Seppi also needed a pick me up victory after winning just one match since the Wimbledon and getting dominated by Jan-Lennard Struff in Winston Salem. Seppi has really fallen off a cliff in the rankings this season and has struggled big time with consistent play. A victory here could go a long way to getting back on track. Seppi has made the third round of a grand slam five times since 2014. Seppi has split his last eight matches on hard court.

These two have played eight times and Nadal has won seven of those meetings. The most recent match was in this year's olympics, a match Nadal won in 18 games. Seppi’s only win over Nadal came in the 2008 Rotterdam Open.

Nadal has owned Seppi throughout his career and just beat him easily a few weeks ago. Add Seppi’s current form and this should be another easy win for Nadal.

Straight sets victory for the Spaniard.
