Rafael Nadal and David Goffin meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis Barcelona Open.
Rafael Nadal is coming off a straight sets win over Martin Klizan that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Nadal won 68 percent of his first serve points and 74 percent of his second serve points. Nadal had some issues in the second set of his quarterfinal match but managed to save set points and find a way to close the deal, preventing the wear and tear of a third set. Nadal continues to serve extremely well the past few weeks and just showed that he can still take his game to that second and third gear when needed. At almost 32 years old, Nadal is still proving he’s the guy to beat on clay. Nadal hasn’t lost a semifinal appearance since the 2016 olympics. Nadal hopes to make his second final appearance of the year and 113th final appearance of his career. Nadal has won 15 straight matches on clay court.
David Goffin is coming off a three sets win over Roberto Bautista Agut that took 29 games to decide. In the victory, Goffin won 70 percent of his first serve points and 53 percent of his second serve points. Goffin was rather solid in his quarterfinal victory, as he won 44 percent of his return points and managed to break six times on 10 chances. Goffin also got 68 percent of his first serves in play, a percentage that will need to be repeated if he’s going to have any chance of pulling off the upset in this match. Goffin has lost three of his last four semifinal appearances. Goffin hopes to make his first final appearance since the 2017 ATP World Tour Finals and his 12th final appearance of his career. Goffin has won five of his last six matches on clay court.
These two have played three times and Nadal has won two of those matches. The most recent meeting was in the 2017 ATP World Tour Finals, a match Goffin won in three sets. The other two matches were on clay, Nadal won both in straight sets.
I said it during the Monte Carlo Masters, and I’ll say it here; do not bet against Nadal on clay.
