Rafael Nadal and Denis Istomin meet in the first round of the 2016 US Open.

Rafael Nadal is still trying to shake off the cobwebs and prove he’s back to being one of the top players in the world. Nadal has battled injury issues all season long and enters the US Open losing three of his last four matches. Nadal did make a deep run in the olympics but didn’t leave with a medal and was upset rather easily against Borna Coric in the Cincinnati Masters. We know Nadal is going to give it his all, but watching his form and body language early will be telling how far he can go. Nadal has lost in the first round of a grand slam twice since 2013. Nadal has split his last 10 matches on hard court.

Denis Istomin has had a lot of time to recharge the batteries since losing in the first round of the olympics. Istomin has now fallen out of the top-100 and enters the US Open losing four of his last seven matches. While the wheels may look like they’re starting to come off for the 29-year-old Istomin, he did beat Kevin Anderson in the Wimbledon and was able to steal a set from David Goffin in the same tournament. A fast start could make Istomin a dangerous first round opponent. Istomin has lost in the first round of a grand slam in six of his last eight appearances. Istomin has split his last 10 matches on hard court.

These two have met four times and Nadal has won all four meetings. The most recent match was in the 2014 Miami Masters, a match Nadal won in 13 games. This will be the third match on hard court.

The head to head history doesn’t do much for Istomin confidence, and his form doesn’t give him much hope. Even with Nadal being hit or miss, he should be able to win this match rather easily.

Give me Nadal in straight sets.
