Rafael Nadal will be competing against Dominic Thiem in the semifinals of the 2019 ATP Barcelona Open in Spain.
Dominic Thiem had an emphatic win in the previous round as the Austrian defeated Guido Pella in straight sets. Thiem is an exceptional clay court player and his athletic nature was displayed during the win. Thiem won 45% of his receiving points and broke Pella’s serve on 4 occasions. The receiving was backed up by a strong serve as Dominic Thiem hit 5 aces and won 90% of his service games. Dominic Thiem has a strong record at the Barcelona Open as the Spaniard finished second at this event in 2017.
On the other side of the coin, Rafael Nadal also won his previous match in straight sets. Nadal was very efficient during the win as he broke his opponent’s serve on 3 occasions and won 92% of his service games. Playing in Spain is always a massive bonus for Rafa as he is in his home country but the Barcelona Open is a special event for Spaniard. Nadal is the reigning champion and has won this title 11 times in the past.
Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem have a substantial head-to-head history as these two players have played each other 11 times. Major matches between these players include the final of the 2018 French Open and the quarterfinals of the 2018 US Open. Nadal won both of those matches. The last time that Dominic Thiem defeated Rafa was last season at the Madrid Masters.
This is expected to be an exceptional tennis match as both Rafa and Thiem are superstars on clay. It is tough to pick a winner but I am going to side with Rafa. Nadal is at his best in Barcelona and the 11-time champion looks determined to win title number 12.
