The Line: -- Over/Under:
Rafael Nadal and Dusan Lajovic meet in the first round of the 2017 US Open.
Rafael Nadal is coming off a quarterfinal trip in the Cincinnati Masters and has had mixed results since winning the French Open. Nadal hasn’t exactly been the lights out player he was since winning that tournament, and he’s coming off a match in which he won just 27 percent of his return points. The good news for Nadal is that he should be well rested with little wear and tear on his body, and that’s always key for somebody who puts so much into their play and lays it all out there. Nadal has lost in the first round of a grand slam once since 2014. Nadal has never lost in the first round of the US Open. Nadal has won six of his last nine matches on hard court.
Dusan Lajovic is coming off a second round appearance at the Winston-Salem and is just 12-15 on the main tour this season. Lajovic has been really sharp outside of the main tour, which includes recently winning the Bastad Challenger, but he just hasn’t had much success otherwise this season. Still, Lajovic can never ben overlooked due to his powerful serve and ability to make plays at the net due to his doubles background. Lajovic hopes to make the second round of a grand slam for the ninth time in his career. Lajovic is 0-2 in his US Open career. Lajovic has split his last eight matches on hard court.
These two have played once, which was in the 2014 French Open, a match Nadal won in straight sets. The match took 22 games.
Lajovic has done nothing this season to suggest he can even win a set against Nadal. He’s had a hard time competing on the big stage and is playing a rested and motivated player who is one of the favorites to win this event.
Nadal takes this in straight sets.
