Rafael Nadal and Fabio Fognini meet in the quarterfinals of the 2019 tennis Rogers Cup.
Rafael Nadal is coming off a straight sets win over Guido Pella that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Nadal won 78 percent of his first serve points and 50 percent of his second serve points. Nadal won 68 percent of his total service points and converted on three of his 19 break points. Nadal got 65 percent of his first serves in play and saved two of his three break points. Nadal has won all four sets this tournament and his serve has gotten slightly better each set, so he’s playing himself into better form as the tournament drags out. Nadal looks to win three straight matches for the eighth straight tournament. Nadal has won six of his last seven matches on hard court.
Fabio Fognini is coming off a straight sets win over Adrian Mannarino that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Fognini won 65 percent of his first serve points and 53 percent of his second serve points. Fognini won 61 percent of his total service points and converted on five of his 12 break points. Fognini got 69 percent of his first serves in play and saved two of his four break points. Fognini has won all four sets this tournament and has produced a combined nine breaks. Fognini looks to win three straight matches for the first time since making the fourth round of the French Open. Fognini has won three of his last four matches on hard court.
These two have played 15 times and Nadal has won 11 of those matches. However, Fognini won the most recent match this year in Monte Carlo. Nadal is 5-1 against Fognini on hard court. Ten of the matches overall were decided in straight sets.
Fognini has the confidence to win this match given he beat Nadal earlier this year, and the hard court should help. A lot of the matches between these two have taken place on clay and Fognini has still had some success. With that said, Nadal seems to be moving well on this surface and his return is on point. Fognini also has a history of choking a bit as the competition gets steeper.
I like Nadal to make the semis.
