The Line: -- Over/Under:
Rafael Nadal and Grigor Dimitrov meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis Monte Carlo Masters.
Rafael Nadal is coming off a straight sets win over Dominic Thiem that took 14 games to decide. In the victory, Nadal won 84 percent of his first serve points and 80 percent of his second serve points. Nadal dropped just six service points in his quarterfinal victory and gave himself 12 break chances. Nadal is simply at another level right now and has lost a combined 11 games in his first three matches. At this level, there’s nobody who can come close to competing with Nadal in his current form on this surface. Nadal has won 11 straight semifinal appearances, as his last loss came in the 2016 olympics. Nadal hopes to reach his first final since last years Shanghai Masters and his 12th career final appearance at the Monte Carlo Masters. Nadal has won 10 straight matches on clay court.
Grigor Dimitrov is coming off a straight sets win over David Goffin that took 23 games to decide. In the victory, Dimitrov won 75 percent of his first serve points and 38 percent of his second serve points. Dimitrov is coming off his best performance of the tournament yet, but he can still be better with his second serve and was broken three times. Dimitrov is doing a great job of finding a way to win these matches, but he’ll have to take his game to another level if he’s going to have a chance of hanging around in this contest. Dimitrov has been broken three times each in his last three matches, something that won’t fly in this meeting. Dimitrov has won four of his last six semifinal appearances. Dimitrov hopes to make his second final appearance of the year and his second career final appearance in a ATP World Tour Masters 1000. Dimitrov has never made the finals of the Monte Carlo Masters. Dimitrov has won five of his last six matches on clay court.
These two have played 11 times and Nadal has won 10 of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2017 Shanghai Masters, a match Nadal won in three sets. Dimitrov’s only win over Nadal came in the 2016 China Open. Nadal is 3-0 against Dimitrov on clay court.
I said it many times before, and I’ll say it again; do not bet against Nadal on clay court. Nadal is not only getting better each match and is winning with ease, but he’s owned Dimitrov in head to head numbers. Dimitrov also has yet to play to his potential, which is good he’s finding ways to win, but that only works so long, as eventually you have to put together a complete tennis performance.
Nadal reaches another Monte Carlo Masters final.
