The Line: -- Over/Under:
Spanish tennis superstar, Rafael Nadal will be playing at the 2019 ATP Italian Open. Nadal will begin his campaign in the second round where he will face Jeremy Chardy from France.
Rafa has looked in very good form but the Spaniard has failed to win the big tournaments this season. Nadal made the semifinals of the Madrid Masters, Monte Carlo Masters and Barcelona Open. These are three tournaments where Nadal would normally win the title but the Spaniard has been beaten in big matches. That being said, Nadal has looked in decent form as he has beaten the likes of Grigor Dimitrov and Stan Wawrinka in the past few weeks. Nadal has a good record at the Italian Open as he has won the title 8 times and is the current champion.
On the other side of the coin, Jeremy Chardy looked good in the opening round as he defeated Richard Gasquet in 3 sets. Chardy returned serve well as he won almost 40% of his receiving points. Chardy broke Gasquet’s serve on 4 occasions while winning 92% of his service games to secure a very solid victory. This will be a very tough challenge for Chardy as he is playing an elite opponent in Nadal.
Jeremy Chardy and Rafael Nadal have played each other twice in the past. Nadal has a 2-0 record against Chardy. The most recent match between these two players was in 2015 where Nadal won in straight sets.
While Jeremy Chardy had a solid win, I see him losing this match. Nadal is an elite player and he has been in very good form. Nadal’s record in Rome is legendary and it seems like the Spaniard in on a different planet when playing on clay. Chardy has looked good but Nadal is simply too good. I see Rafa winning in straight sets.
