Khachanov vs. Nadal
|Date & Time||Friday July 7, 2017, 9:00 PM (EDT)|
The Line: -- Over/Under:
Rafael Nadal and Karen Khachanov meet in the third round of the 2017 Wimbledon.
Rafael Nadal is coming off a straight sets win over Donald Young that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Nadal won 80 percent of his first serve points and 60 percent of his second serve points. Nadal continues to play flawless tennis, as he’s now won 27 straight sets and hasn’t come close to losing a match since the Rome Masters. Nadal is returning at a high level, serving at a high level and is coming off a match in which he won 43 percent of his return points. While grass may not be his best surface, Nadal is in elite form right now and it’s going to take a special performance to break his rhythm. Nadal hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the 10th time in his last 14 tries. Nadal has won seven of his last nine matches on grass court.
Karen Khachanov is coming off a four sets win over Thiago Monteiro that took 47 games to decide. In the victory, Khachanov won 72 percent of his first serve points and 59 percent of his second serve points. Khachanov continues to come way with big point after big point, as he’s won three tiebreaks this tournament overall and is fresh off a match in which he produced 64 winners. Khachanov now has 134 winners in his last two matches, a stat that gives him a shot in just his second ever grand slam third round appearance. Khachanov simply has to keep hitting his spots in order to have a shot at the upset. Khachanov hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the second time in his career. Khachanov has won five of his last six matches on grass court.
This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.
Khachanov can make this interesting if he has another match where he can hit 60-plus winners. But he’s not going to win this match given the way Nadal is playing. The consistency is just unmated, as the guy hasn’t dropped a set in his last nine matches. Khachanov will need to get a lot of help from Nadal to pull off the upset and based on what we’ve seen the last several weeks, that’s not happening.
Nadal reaches the fourth round.
