Rafael Nadal will make his return from injury at the 2019 ATP Monte Carlo Masters in Monaco. Nadal will play his first match of the tournament in the second round where he will face Roberto Bautista Agut.
Roberto Bautista Agut won his previous match in 3 sets as he beat John Millman from Australia. It was a poor opening set from Agut as he lost 6-3 but the Spaniard showed his class by winning the final 2 sets and the match. In the final 2 sets, Roberto Bautista Agut only lost 2 games which showed his ability. During the win, Roberto Bautista Agut returned serve exceptionally well as he won 48% of his receiving points which allowed him to break John Millman’s serve on 5 occasions. This will be a significantly tougher match for Agut as he is playing an all-time great.
Rafa will begin his campaign in the second round after the world number 2 received an opening round bye due to his seeding. Rafael Nadal has been struggling with injury over the past few months and that saw the Spaniard miss the ATP Miami Open. Nadal last played at the Indian Wells Open where he made the semifinals before retiring due to injury prior to the start of his scheduled match against Roger Federer. The start of the clay-court season should give Rafael Nadal a boost and I am expecting the 11 time French Open champion to be back to his best at this tournament.
Rafael Nadal and Roberto Bautista Agut have played each other twice in the past. As it currently stands, Nadal has a head-to-head record of 2-0. The most recent match between these two players was at the 2017 French Open where Nadal won in straight sets.
All in all, I am going to pick Rafa to win this match. Nadal is the greatest clay-court player and the world number 2 looked in decent touch during the Indian Wells Open. Nadal looks way too strong for Agut and I see the French Open champion to win this match with some ease.
