Rafael Nadal and Thomaz Bellucci meet in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.
Rafael Nadal is coming off a straight sets win over Gilles Simon that took 22 games to decide. Nadal has yet to drop a set this tournament and lost more than three games in a single set just once up to this point. Nadal is slowly starting to look like the player of old, as he’s finishing his points quickly and making little unforced errors, something that killed him for much of his decline. Of course, when healthy and in good form, Nadal is as scary of opponent out there and already has an olympic gold medal from 2008. It’ll be interesting to see if Nadal can keep up this level of play. Nadal has won 11 of his last 15 matches on hard court.
Thomaz Bellucci is coming off a straight sets win over David Goffin that took 23 games to decide. Bellucci has lost just one set this tournament and has to be feeling great after just beating a top-15 player in straight sets. Bellucci hasn't had much recent success after being a top-30 player many years ago, but he’s enjoying the moment and is kind of dangerous considering he has all of Brazil behind him. Home crowds do wonders for underdogs and gives them that extra boost when matches get tight. Bellucci may have a shot at another big upset if he’s able to get off to a strong and fast start. Bellucci has won four of his last seven matches on hard court.
These two have played five times in the past and Nadal has won all five meetings in straight sets. The most recent match was in the 2015 Wimbledon.
Bellucci may have the home crowd behind him, but that’s not going to be enough here. Nadal is in solid form right now and has owned the history.
Nadal in straight sets.
