Rafael Nadal and Yannick Hanfmann meet in the first round of the 2019 tennis French Open.

Rafael Nadal enters this tournament as the clear favorite to win and has a more than favorable draw to make bettors very happy. Nadal is coming off an Italian Open title where he dropped just one set and pretty much dominated Novak Djokovic in the final where he lost one game in the two sets he won. Nadal has now won 17 of his last 20 sets on clay and is back to serving at a high level. Barring injury, it’s tough seeing anybody stop Nadal from winning his third straight French Open. Nadal hasn’t lost in the first round of a grand slam since the 2016 Australian Open. Nadal has won 11 of his last 13 matches on clay court.

Yannick Hanfmann qualified for this tournament after winning all six sets in three matches and will be in his first ever French Open. Despite being 27 years old, this is only the second time Hanfmann has participated in a grand slam, as he was in the 2018 US Open where he lost to Philipp Kohlschreiber in four sets. With little main tour experience overall, little is expected from Hanfmann, but this is valuable experience he can take with him moving forward regardless of what happens in the match. Hanfmann hasn’t won a main tour match since Munich last year in April. Hanfmann looks to win his first ever grand slam match. Hanfmann has split his last six matches on clay court.

There’s no match history between these two players.

Hanfmann doesn’t have the main tour or grand slam experience to be a factor in this match against Nadal. We see the Spaniard so often mop the floor with seasoned players in this tournament. While it’s a big moment for Hanfmann and he should enjoy it, the outcome of this match will never be in doubt.

Nadal rolls in straight sets.
