The Line: -- Over/Under:
Spanish tennis superstar, Rafael Nadal will be playing at Wimbledon. Nadal will begin his campaign at Wimbledon against Yuichi Sugita from Japan.
Yuichi Sugita enters this tournament following the qualifying event where he won 3 matches. Sugita was solid throughout the qualifiers and in the final match, he defeated Lukas Rosol in straight sets. Yuichi Sugita didn’t drop a set during the qualifying event.
In general, Sugita is commonly seen in Challenger tournaments as he has not played a full ATP event in 2019. At the age of 30, Yuichi Sugita has enough ATP experience and he has won an ATP grass court event. Yuichi Sugita won the ATP Antalya Open in 2017.
This is going to be an extremely tough challenge and Sugita will have to be at his best if he wishes to compete with Rafa.
Looking at Rafa, the Spaniard has not played since the French Open. Nadal showed his class at Roland Garros as he won another French Open title to demonstrate his clay court dominance. During the French Open, Rafa defeated the likes of Kei Nishikori, Dominic Thiem, and Roger Federer. Nadal only lost 2 sets in his entire French Open campaign. Prior to Roland Garros, Nadal also won the Italian Open. Grass is one of Nadal’s weaker surfaces although his record in still outstanding considering he has won Wimbledon on 2 occasions. Nadal made the semifinals at Wimbledon last season. Outside of Wimbledon, Nadal has also won grass court events such as the Stuttgart Open and the Queen’s Club Championship.
Rafael Nadal and Yuichi Sugita have not played each other in the past.
Yuichi Sugita played very well throughout the qualifiers and the Japanese superstar will feel that he is in good form. That being said, Sugita lacks the experience and skills to compete against an elite player like Nadal. Nadal is still one of the top players in the world and the Spaniard has the experience of winning Wimbledon on 2 occasions. Nadal is in outstanding touch having just won the French Open and I see him being too strong for Yuichi Sugita in this match. I am predicting Rafa to win this match in straight sets.
