Austrian tennis superstar, Dominic Thiem will be playing at the 2019 ATP Madrid Masters in Spain. Thiem will begin his Madrid Masters campaign in the second round against Reilly Opelka from the United States.

Reilly Opelka played in the opening round of the tournament where the American beat Pablo Carreño Busta in straight sets. Opelka dominated with his serving as he hit 14 aces and won 78% of his service games. Opelka won all of his service games during the win. While the serving was impressive, Reilly Opelka struggled to win return games as the American only won 28% of his return points. Opelka only won 1 return game which is a concerning statistic considering Thiem will not make it easy to win service games.

Looking at Dominic Thiem, the Austrian is in supreme form after winning the Barcelona Open. Thiem was very impressive in Barcelona as he beat the likes of Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev. Thiem won 100% of his sets in Barcelona which showed the tennis world that the Austrian is an incredible clay court player. Thiem finished second at the Madrid Masters last season and the Austrian will be confident in his ability to win this season considering his recent form.

This will be the first time that Reilly Opelka and Dominic Thiem will be playing each other at an ATP event.

Reilly Opelka managed to win against Pablo Carreño Busta but I don’t see the American making it past Dominic Thiem. Opelka is reliant on his big serve which is not very effective on clay. Thiem is very efficient on clay and I see the Austrian neutralizing Opelka’s serve with ease. Furthermore, Opelka is very poor at receiving which is a very costly trait when playing on clay. Dominic Thiem is in incredible form and I see him beating Reilly Opelka in straight sets.
