Its an All-American clash as Reilly Opelka meets Mackenzie McDonald in the second-round of the 2020 Delray Beach Open. Only one of them can make it to the quarterfinals, but who will it be?
Mackenzie McDonald booked his spot in the second-round by beating Yasutaka Uchiyama in straight sets. McDonald looked solid in that match and it never looked like he would lose it. McDonald won over 80% of his first serve and 70% of his second serve points. Those numbers are great, but against a player like Reilly Opelka, his return of serve will need to be impeccable. McDonald used to have a lot of hype around him, however, he never really has lived up to it. McDonald has the game to compete on the ATP Tour, but the lack in consistency in his game has only really allowed him to compete in challenger level tournaments.
Reilly Opelka came through a tougher match, when he beat Ernests Gulbis in 3 sets. Opelka started out solid, but in the first-set tiebreak he just did not perform to his standard. In the following two sets, however, Opelka put his foot down and absolutely dominated from all aspects. Opelka will want to win here in Delray Beach as he knows he is one of the best players left in the tournament after the withdrawal of Nick Kyrgios. Opelka will have to ensure his serve is on point if he wants to make it to the quarterfinals.
This will be the 3rd meeting between both players, with the H2H being tied at 1-1. Their prior encounters were in qualifying matches which do not really count as players might have different motivations based on how qualifying is calculated. This match will only go one way for me, and that is an Opelka victory. Opelka is a bigger and better version of John Isner, and McDonald has not lived up to his potential. Expect Opelka to come out and dominate.
Reilly Opelka to win.
