The Line -- Over/Under:
Richard Gasquet and Aljaz Bedene square off early in the first round of the 2016 Wimbledon.
Richard Gasquet hopes to find his form rather quickly after making the semifinals in last years Wimbledon. Gasquet has kind of been a hit or miss player the last several tournaments, as he made the quarterfinals of the French Open and then lost in the first round of the AEGON Championships. Gasquet has had some questionable losses as of late with Steve Johnson and Lucas Pouille being just a couple. However, we all know what Gasquet is capable of when he’s on, as his backhand and athleticism gives him a shot to beat anybody and make a deep run in this tournament. Gasquet hasn’t lost in the first round of a grand slam since the 2010 French Open. Gasquet has lost 10 of his last 15 matches on grass.
Aljaz Bedene has been hit or miss pretty much all season long and has split his last 12 matches. Bedene did make the third round of the French Open and managed to win seven games against Andy Murray in the AEGON Championships. Bedene has been nibbling around being a top-50 player for a little over six months and could use a win over a top-10 player to help boost his confidence and his positioning. Bedene has to finish his points quickly in this match as long rallies will just give his opponent the advantage every time. Bedene is 3-8 all-time against top-10 players. Bedene has made it out of the first round of a grand slam three times. Bedene has lost six of his last 10 matches on grass.
This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.
Bedene is no stranger to giving above-average competition a run for their money, and he’s won 26 percent of his matches against top-10 players. This is no pushover if you’re looking for a first round upset. However, Gasquet usually shows up in grand slams and is still in decent form despite a few hiccups here and there.
Give me Gasquet in four sets.
