Richard Gasquet and Dennis Novak meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Swedish Open.

Richard Gasquet is coming off a first round exit in Wimbledon where he got nothing on his second serve and lost the match in straight sets. Gasquet has now lost three of his last four matches and his main issue has been not being able to serve consistently. Maybe a couple of weeks off allowed Gasquet to clean some things up and recharge the batteries, but there are clear reasons for concern given his recent play. Gasquet has lost his opening match three times since Cincinnati. Gasquet has lost four of his last six matches on clay court.

Dennis Novak is coming off a straight sets win over Steve Darcis that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Novak won 81 percent of his first serve points and 58 percent of his second serve points. Novak won 73 percent of his total service points and converted on four of his 14 break points. Novak got 66 percent of his first serves in play, faced just one break point and produced 10 aces. Novak gives himself a chance against just about anybody in this field if he’s going to serve like that moving forward, but the 25-year-old hasn’t shown much consistency over the last year. Novak has a chance to win back-to-back matches on the main tour for the first time since last years Wimbledon. Novak has split his last six matches on clay court.

There’s no match history between these two players.

Novak is coming off a clean match where he got a lot of free points with his serve, but he’s also somebody who hasn’t won back-to-back matches on the main tour in a year. Gasquet is going through some trouble, but he’s well rested and is still a competitor who can easily beat lesser competition when he’s playing at a decent level. Despite his struggles, I have more trust in Gasquet on the main tour.

Gasquet reaches the quarters.

Pick:
Richard Gasquet
