The Line: -- Over/Under:
Richard Gasquet and Henri Laaksonen meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis Swedish Open.
Richard Gasquet is coming off a straight sets win over Casper Ruud that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Gasquet won 77 percent of his first serve points and 64 percent of his second serve points. Gasquet won 71 percent of his total service points and was broken on just one of his five break chances. Gasquet has now dropped 15 aces in his last two matches and has been highly effective with his first serve overall. We know the grit, movement and shotmaking skills that Gasquet brings to the table, but he’s going to be the favorite to win this tournament if he continues to serve the way he has been his last couple of matches. Gasquet has a chance to make his third final appearance of the season and his 31st of his career. Gasquet has won three of his last four matches on clay court.
Henri Laaksonen is coming off a straight sets win over Grigor Dimitrov that took 27 games to decide. In the victory, Laaksonen won 57 percent of his first serve points and 71 percent of his second serve points. Laaksonen won 60 percent of his total service points and managed to convert on six of his 10 break chances. Laaksonen bounced back nicely after dropping the first set and has now own six of his last eight sets played. You’d like to see the service percentages improve, but the results alone are enough to give the inexperienced Laaksonen some confidence heading into this match against much steeper competition. Laaksonen has a chance to make his first ever ATP singles final appearance. Laaksonen hasn’t made a final appearance overall since the 2016 JSM Challenger of Champaign. Laaksonen has won four of his last five matches on clay court.
This will be the first ever meeting between these two players.
Laaksonen has never been able to come through on the big stage and has very little experience on the ATP level overall. Gasquet has looked like the Gasquet of old this season, as he looks fit, is playing well and his serve has drastically improved from past years. After struggling to make deep tournament runs the past few years, Gasquet has a chance for his third final appearance of the year. As long as Gasquet plays the way he’s played recently, he’s going to win, especially with Laaksonen struggling with his serve for long stretches.
Gasquet reaches the final.
