Richard Gasquet and Tomas Berdych meet Tuesday afternoon in the fourth round of the Miami Masters.
Richard Gasquet is coming off a straight sets win over Benoit Paire, a match that was decided in 15 games. Gasquet has won 10 of his last 12 singles matches and has lost just 11 games this tournament. Gasquet has gotten off to a solid start this year, which includes winning the Open Sud de France. Gasquet is moving well, doing a solid job of holding serve and has improved his return game as of late. It’s nice to see Gasquet play consistent tennis to start the season. Gasquet has made the quarterfinals of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 just twice since 2014. Gasquet has made it out of the fourth round of the Miami Masters just once in his career.
Tomas Berdych is coming off a three set win over Steve Johnson and has played just one match this tournament. Berdych has won nine of his last 13 singles matches since the Australian Open and continues to dominate with his service game. In fact, Berdych has played a tiebreak in each of his last three matches, and he’s won two of those. Berdych hasn’t been as consistent as we saw at times last year, but he’s still one of the tougher guys on tour to play due to his service game and ball speed. Berdych is always a tough out when he’s dialed in. Berdych has made at least the quarterfinals of the Miami Masters three straight years.
These two have played 13 times in the past, and Gasquet has won seven of those meetings. The most recent match was in last years US Open, a match Gasquet won in four sets. Berdych has won three of the last four meetings against Gasquet. This will be the 10th time these two meet on hard court.
Berdych is the better player here, and he’s had the upper hand over Gasquet in three of the four matches since 2014. Gasquet is sure to struggle with the returns and will likely cave due to the pressure of being perfect with his own serve.
Berdych once again reaches the quarters in Miami.
