Roberta Vinci and Angelique Kerber meet in the quarterfinals of the 2016 US Open.

Roberta Vinci is coming off a straight sets win over Lesia Tsurenko that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Vinci won 71 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Vinci has always loved the US Open more than any other grand slam and now has four career quarterfinal appearances, all at this event. Vinci has dropped just one set all tournament and just proved in her last match that she can win despite a high unforced error (26) total. The great defense and experience will make Vinci a tough out once again. Vinci hopes to make her second career grand slam semifinal appearance. Vinci has won six of her last eight matches on hard court.

Angelique Kerber is coming off a straight sets win over Petra Kvitova that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Kerber won 73 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Kerber has yet to drop a set this tournament and has dropped just 10 games in her last two matches. Kerber isn’t giving her opponents much to take advantage of and she’s an inspired player who has her eyes on becoming the top ranked women in the world. Kerber hopes to make her fifth career grand slam semifinal and third this season. Kerber has won 13 of her last 15 matches on hard court.

These two have split their previous four matches with the most recent match coming in the 2013 Beijing Open, a match Kerber won in straight sets. Vinci beat Kerber in 2013 and 2012. This will be the fourth match on hard court.

As we saw last season, Vinci should never be overlooked in the US Open. However, Kerber has been a rock all season long. Also, Kerber is far better than she was a couple of years ago and Vinci is older and slower. This is a more than doable match for Kerber.

Give me the German to make the semifinals.

Pick:
Angelique Kerber
