Roberto Bautista Agut and Borna Coric clash in the third round of the 2016 French Open.
Roberto Bautista Agut is coming off a straight sets win over Paul-Henri Mathieu that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Bautista Agut won 73 percent of his first serve points and 51 percent of his second serve points. Bautista Agut is getting stronger the later things play, as he’s lost five or less games in each of his final two sets. Bautista Agut has hit 71 combined winners and has won no less than 73 percent of his first serve points. Bautista Agut looks like someone who wants to become a top-10 player. Bautista Agut looks for his fourth straight appearance in a grand slam fourth round.
Borna Coric is coming off a four set win over Bernard Tomic that took 43 games to decide. In the victory, Coric won 73 percent of his first serve points and 63 percent of his second serve points. Coric is getting at least 62 percent of his first serves in play and has racked up 79 winners in his first two matches. Coric is very dangerous when he’s hitting his shots, as she’s shown against Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray the past couple of years. Coric has to be confident after just beating a top-25 player rather convincingly, and now he has a shot at the biggest win of his young grand slam career. Coric has never reached the fourth round of a grand slam.
These two have played three times, and Bautista Agut leads the series, 2-1. The most recent match was in this year's Chennai Open, a match Coric won in three sets. The other matches came in the 2015 Hamburg Open and Umag Open. This will be their third match on clay.
Coric has the most recent victory between these two, but Bautista Agut won both matches on clay court. Still, I’m a fan of Coric’s game and think it’s only a matter of time before he’s one of the faces on the men’s side. Coric’s shotmaking and athleticism could give Bautista Agut problems.
I’m siding with Coric for the minor upset.
