Roberto Bautista-Agut and Roger Federer meet in the quarterfinals of the 2019 tennis Halle Open.
Roberto Bautista-Agut is coming off a straight sets win over Richard Gasquet that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Bautista-Agut won 87 percent of his first serve points and 57 percent of his second serve points. Bautista-Agut won 75 percent of his total service points and converted on three of his three break points. Bautista-Agut got 60 percent of his first serves in play and saved both of his break points. Bautista-Agut has won all four sets this tournament and has yet to be broken. Each of Bautista-Agut’s last four victories have been decided in straight sets. Bautista-Agut has a chance to win three straight matches for the first time since the Miami Open. Bautista-Agut has won five of his last six matches on grass court.
Roger Federer is coming off a three sets win over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga that took 35 games to decide. In the victory, Federer won 76 percent of his first serve points and 62 percent of his second serve points. Federer won 71 percent of his total service points and converted on two of his four break points. Federer got 66 percent of his first serves in play and saved five of his seven break points. Federer continues to be a little shaky at times with his serve and doesn’t seem 100 percent comfortable yet on grass, but he continues to come through on the big points, which has been the difference in his first two matches. Federer has won six of his last eight matches that have gone the distance. Federer has won 10 of his last 12 matches on grass court.
These two have played eight times and Federer has won every match, including the most recent meeting in 2018 Shanghai. Federer won the only match on grass in 2015 Wimbledon. Seven of the eight matches were decided in straight sets.
Bautista-Agut will be able to hang in this match if Federer continues to have hiccups in his service game, but that’s about his only hope. We’ve seen this matchup enough over the years to know he has nothing that bothers Federer, as the Spaniard has won just one set against him in eight matches. Not much of a breakdown needed.
Federer cruises to the semifinals.
