Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev meet Sunday in the final of the 2017 Rogers Cup.

Roger Federer is coming off a straight sets win over Robin Haase that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Federer won 87 percent of his first serve points and 79 percent of his second serve points. Federer has now won 26 of his last 27 sets played and is coming off a match in which he lost just nine of 54 service points and gave his opponent just two break chances. I’ve said it before, but Federer is just in rare form, as he has everything going for him right now and I’m not sure anybody can beat him with the way he’s currently playing. With this being his sixth final appearance of the season and him rarely in danger of dropping a set these days, Federer is making a case as the top player in the world. Federer hopes to win his sixth title of the season and 94th of his career. Federer is 63-23 in his career in final appearances on hard court. Federer has won 16 straight matches on hard court.

Alexander Zverev is coming off a straight sets win over Denis Shapovalov that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Zverev won 81 percent of his first serve points and 48 percent of his second serve points. Zverev had his struggles in his semifinal match, but he came away with majority of the big points and won 43 percent of his return points. Zverev has shown he can take his game to another level when he needs to and no longer folds in pressure situations the way he did a year ago. While he was the more talented player, beating Shapovalov in Canada with the whole crowd against him are the type of matches that are only going to make Zverev that much better and confident as he continues to grow. Zverev hopes to win his fifth title this season and the sixth title of his career. Zverev is 3-0 in his career in final appearances on hard court. Zverev has won nine straight matches on hard court.

These two have played three times and Federer has won two of those meetings. The most recent match was in this years Halle Open, a match Federer won in 16 games. Zverev’s one win over Federer came in the 2016 Halle Open.

Zverev is playing terrific tennis, as he’s growing up into a consistent player before our eyes and the confidence isis growing by the point. I wouldn’t be shocked if Zverev found a way to win this match. However, picking against Federer at any point in this season just doesn’t feel right. The guy isn’t coming close to dropping sets let alone matches. It takes one bad game for Federer to takeover a match and become victorious.

This could be tight, but betting against Federer in his form isn’t an option.
