Roger Federer and Aljaz Bedene meet in the first round of the 2018 Australian Open.

Roger Federer is coming off a semifinals appearance at the ATP World Tour Finals and hopes to continue what has been a remarkable three year stretch. Right when people were ready to write off the 36-year-old, Federer has made the finals in four of his last seven grand slam appearances and has lost just three matches since Wimbledon. With Federer’s consistency and so many questions around other players, Federer has to be the favorite to defend his title. Federer hasn’t lost in the first round of a grand slam since the 2003 French Open. Federer has won 13 of his last 14 hard court matches.

Aljaz Bedene is coming off a first round exit in Sydney and enters this tournament 1-2 overall this season. The good news for Bedene is that he did push Dominic Thiem to two competitive sets and had a three setter with Benoit Paire, so despite the losses, he’s put in some decent play and should be sharp heading into this tournament. Bedene has to be better with his second serve if he’s going to have a shot at an upset. Bedene has won nearly 26 percent of his career matches against top-10 players. Bedene has never made it out of the first round of the Australian Open, but does have five second round appearances in grand slams. Bedene has lost four of his last six hard court matches.

This will be their first match on the tennis court.

Unless Federer shows some wear and tear or doesn’t look like the unbeatable machine he’s appeared to be the last couple of years, there’s no betting against him. Bedene does have some underrated success against top-10 players in his career, but nobody can beat Federer when he’s on his game. Not to mention he hasn’t lost a first round match in a grand slam in 15 years.

Federer rolls.
