The Line: -- Over/Under:
Roger Federer and Borna Coric meet in the semifinals of the 2019 tennis Dubai.
Roger Federer is coming off a straight sets win over Marton Fucsovics that took 23 games to decide. In the victory, Federer won 76 percent of his first serve points and 43 percent of his second serve points. Federer won 64 percent of his total service points and saved two of his three break points. Federer is coming off his best match yet, but he’s still not playing at his highest level when you consider he’s played eight sets in his last three matches and needed a tiebreak in his last match. Opposing players have hung around with Federer this week, and that belief is a starting point for his upcoming opponent. Federer hopes to make his first final appearance since last years Swiss Indoors and the 152nd final appearance of his career. Federer has won six of his last seven matches on outdoor hard court.
Borna Coric is coming off a three sets win over Nikoloz Basilashvili that took 31 games to decide. In the victory, Coric won 78 percent of his first serve points and 43 percent of his second serve points. Coric won 64 percent of his totals service points and converted on four of his seven break points. Coric has now won all three matches this tournament in three sets, and it will be interesting to see how much he has left physically after playing two and a half hours. This is a quick turnaround for the young Coric, who has now played over seven hours of tennis in his last three matches. Coric has 12 career wins over top-10 players, with six of those wins coming last year. Coric hopes to make his first final appearance since last years Shanghai Masters and the sixth final appearance of his career. Coric has won six of his last seven matches on outdoor hard court.
These two have split the previous four meetings, with Coric winning the most recent match in Shanghai last year. Coric has actually beaten Federer in the last two meetings, including two of the three matches last year. However, Federer is 2-1 against Coric on hard court. Two of the four matches have been decided in straight sets.
Coric obviously has a shot here based on his success against Federer, but he’s also quite inconsistent and doesn’t do a great job of securing momentum. Coric is too hit or miss for me to back against top tier players. Federer is the fresher player heading into this match and is head and shoulders the easier player to trust in these big matches.
I’ll side with Federer, likely in straight sets.
