The Line: -- Over/Under:
Roger Federer will play Dominic Thiem in the group stages of the 2018 ATP Finals in London.
Roger Federer had a shock opening match defeat as he was beaten by Kei Nishikori in straight sets. It was a poor performance by Federer as he lost 2 service games which allowed Nishikori to gain the advantage in the contest. Furthermore, Federer had problems with the umpire which resulted in a very poor day for the Swiss Master. That being said, Roger Federer is a class act and has an exceptional record at this event having won that ATP Finals in London in 2011 and 2011. With such a strong record at this venue, it is fair to assume we will see a greatly improved Federer for this match.
On the other side of the coin, Dominic Thiem also lost his opening match as he was beaten by Kevin Anderson. Thiem was also beaten in straight sets with the Austrian struggling with his return games. In the entire match, Thiem won no return games which allowed Anderson to win without much trouble. This is the third time that Thiem is playing at the ATP Finals, a tournament where he has a very poor record. Thiem has a record of 2-5 at the ATP Finals and has never made it past the group stages. With such a poor record at this event and a determined Federer as his opponent, it will be hard for Dominic Thiem to turn things around.
Dominic Thiem and Roger Federer have played 3 times in the past with a surprising head-to-head record which Thiem lead 2-1. The last time these two players played against each other was in 2016 in Stuttgart where Thiem won in 3 sets.
All in all, I am going to pick Roger Federer to win. While Thiem has the stronger head-to-head record, the Austrian will struggle to play against Federer on hard courts where he is not as strong as other surfaces. Federer has an exceptional record at the ATP Finals and I am picking him to win this match.
