Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Roger Federer and Dusan Lajovic meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis Wimbledon.

Roger Federer looks to defend his Wimbledon crown and is in pretty good form considering he won the Stuttgart Open and is coming off a final appearance at the Halle Open. Federer took the clay court season off and showed just how fresh and fit he is heading into arguably his favorite time of the year. Federer is coming off a loss to Borna Coric, but that shouldn’t concern bettors much when you consider he’s made the final in five of his last eight grand slam appearances. Federer should be the overwhelming favorite to win this tournament for the third time since 2012. Federer has won eight of his last nine matches on grass court.

Dusan Lajovic has had a really hit or miss 2018 season and enters the grass court season in which he has very little success or experience. Lajovic plays on grass as little as possible and is just 2-4 at Wimbledon for his career. The good news is Lajovic has had a ton of success on clay, which includes making the quarterfinals of the Madrid Masters, so there should be some sort of confidence for the new 28-year-old. Lajovic has one career win over a top-10 player, which came this year. Lajovic hopes to make the second round of a grand slam for the fourth time since 2017. Lajovic has split his last six matches on grass court.

These two have played once, which was in the 2017 Wimbledon, a match Federer won in straight sets. The match took 30 games to be decided.

Lajovic has the game that should translate to the grass court, but he’s had no success on this surface and doesn’t play on it much. Federer is a threat anywhere he plays, but he’s probably at his best on grass, has owned this tournament over the last decade and is in wonderful form considering he’s made the final in both tournaments since returning. There’s no reason to think about betting against Federer in this match.

Federer wins in straight sets.
